Dry Stone Walling in Northumberland

    ___

Today dry stone walls are appreciated for their aesthetic appeal, skilled traditional craftsmanship, and as an environmentally friendly form of construction. Moreover, dry stone walls are recognised as important habitat for many diverse flora and fauna.

The appearance of a dry stone wall is shaped both by the stone locally available and by the local vernacular style of building: These account for surprising amounts of regional style (and dialect terms to describe them). A single square metre of wall can contain up to a tonne of stone. Dry stone walls (or stane-dykes) in Northumberland and the North East are characterised by level-bedded yellow sandstones, as well as more randomly shaped limestones.

With skilled traditional craftsmanship and experience Northumbrian stonework can realise your project and create a piece of heritage to stand for generations to come.
